ArtBreak Manager

Organization/Program Description

The Shreveport Regional Arts Council, founded in 1976, is the City of Shreveport and Louisiana Division of the Arts designated Arts Organization to oversee Access to the Arts for all Citizens of and Visitors to the 10 parishes of Northwest Louisiana.  The Shreveport Regional Arts Council (SRAC) mission is to maximize access to the Arts by nurturing, producing, presenting, and educating about all of the Arts for all of the people of Northwest Louisiana (NWLA) - targeting those who cannot access the Arts through ordinary means.

One of SRAC's core/foundational programs is Arts in Education - integrating the Arts into the class curriculum for students in NWLA, promoting STEAM (Science, Technology, Education, Arts & Math) Learning, and producing community centered Arts experiences that supplement the curriculum.

The annual, week-long ArtBreak Festival showcases the importance of the Arts and the achievements of students in the Arts.  The festival is held at the Shreveport Convention Center, and showcases the Arts Programs in Caddo Public Schools and surrounding NWLA School Systems, applauds individual students’ Artistic Talent, showcases the community Arts Organizations who provide supplemental Arts instruction/engagement for the school systems, and demonstrates the power of STEAM vs. STEM learning through hands-on activities that foster knowledge in the areas of science, technology, engineering, language arts, history and math through the Arts.

ArtBreak was founded in 1984 as an education and advocacy effort to keep the (threatened by lack of funding) Arts Instructors positions in Caddo Public Schools.  Today, all schools that include Arts in the Curriculum are invited to participate:  Private, Public, Charter, Home and Virtual Schools.  ArtBreak includes these major showcase/demonstration areas:

·         Visual and Literary Juried Showcase with Awards for students in grades ECE -12
