Job Description

ArtBreak is the major festival Component of CELEBRATE EDUCATION:

ArtBreak, KTBS-3 Summer Reading Fest for 2nd grade, Hands-on STEAM learning for 3rd Grade, Community Arts Organizations, and Film Prize Jr.,

The ArtBreak Director implements the vision of the ArtBreak Festival under the direction of the Shreveport Regional Arts Council Executive Director and in partnership with the CELEBRATE EDUCATION Team, Caddo Parish Public Schools, Bossier Parish Public Schools; also serving the interests of Private, Charter, and Home School Associations who wish to exhibit and participate in ArtBreak.  The ArtBreak Director works closely with the Caddo Parish Public Schools Art Supervisor, Henry Price.

The ArtBreak Festival is the annual week-long showcase of the Arts programs in Caddo and Bossier schools, held the last week of April at the Shreveport Convention Center.  The ArtBreak Director is responsible for implementing all plans, activities, logistics and programs of ArtBreak, and removing obstacles for the success of each partner in CELEBRATE EDUCATION. 

The Mission of the ArtBreak Festival is to showcase curriculum and community based Arts Programs in Caddo and Bossier Schools: both intra and extra-curricular Arts Programs.

1.    Arts – all disciplines:  Visual, Literary, Music, Dance, Theatre, Folk, Media, and Multi-Disciplinary

2.   Schools – Public, Private, Home School Association, Charter, Talented Arts Program, Project Talent


ArtBreak Objectives:

1.    Showcase existing School Arts Programs (Visual and Literary Showcase, School Booths, Performances)

2.    Demonstrate and Award Artistic Excellence (Juried Winners Circle / Student Choice Workshops)

3.    Demonstrate two roles of Arts in Education

a.  Arts Education – “Arts” basic skill subjects to be taught by certified art instructors (School Booths, Showcase, Performances, Student Choice Workshops)

b.  Arts In Education – “Arts” are vehicles by which we learn other basic skills when integrated into core subjects. (Hands-on Activities)

4.    Advocate for continued development of Arts Programs in Schools

5.    Include the Special Services department by demonstrating how students use their disability as their ability to create 


ROLES/RESPONSIBILITIES of the ArtBreak Director:

1.    Implement Programs of ArtBreak

a.   Arts in Education 3rd Grade Days with STEAM Teaching

b.   KTBS-3 and SHREVE MEMORIAL LIBRARY 2nd Grade Activities

c.    STYLAMANDER performances throughout the week and weekend

d.   Juried Visual/Literary/Music Composition Exhibition

e.    Student “Master Class” Workshops that focus on the Art of Critique and deepening an artistic skill

f.     Awards Ceremony – Sunday @ 3:00 pm

g.   Weekend Hands-on STEAM activities

h.    Very Special Arts Festival activities that focus on Professional Artists, Student Artists, and students in the Special Services Programs who use their disability as their ability to create

i.      School Performances to include HONOR’S performances and Classroom Performances

j.      Professional Community Performances by Arts in Education Partners like the Shreveport Symphony Orchestra, Shreveport Opera, & YAZZI

k.    Community Hands-On Activities from Partners like Sci-Port, Meadows Museum, Norton Art Gallery, Girl Scouts, etc.

l.      “ArtBreak’s Got Talent” Show (Auditions, Rehearsal, and Production)

m.  School Exhibition Booths

n.    Create threePublications:  Orientation Guide, 3rd Grade Days Curriculum Guide, and Literary Winner’s Book

o.   Oversee the production of a souvenir booth for earned income


2.    Oversee Programming Content for the 3rd Grade Arts in Education Week and Weekend Activities

a.                   STEAM HANDS-ON “Make and Take” and Group Project LEARNING

Recruit, Train, Organize and Schedule Artists (compensated) and Volunteers

(not compensated) for the week; oversee contracts, hours worked & compensation

b.                   COMMUNITY Arts in Education Partners providing Activities

c.                    THE STYLAMANDERS or other “headliner” entertainment

d.                   Very Special Arts Festival Entertainment/Demonstrating Artists

e.                    A highly successful JURY Team for the Visual and Literary Exhibition

f.                     Presenters for “master Classes” in Visual, Literary Critique; Oral  Interpretation, and other classes.

g.                   New programs that advance Arts in Education


3.    Facilitate FESTIVAL Logistics of CELEBRATE EDUCATION

a.   Design physical Site Layout plan of activities, tables, chairs, for BOTH the week and weekend of CELEBRATE EDUCATION spanning two bays and two floors of the Shreveport Convention Center; communicate with all stakeholders.

b.   Manage the decoration plan for the inside and outside of the building

c.    KTBS-3 2nd Grade Summer Reading Festival:  Book Schools, Supplies, & Schedule

d.   Louisiana Film Prize, FILM PRIZE JR. event: Book spaces, oversee set up/ strike

e.    Caddo Parish School Library Sales: Facilitate the signage and space

f.     Book Nurses; provide a First Aid Station

g.   2nd & 3rd Grade Days: 

i.      Create and produce “make and take” Bags for Teachers/Students

ii.     Procure High School Student Volunteers for tasks throughout the week:  Beverage distribution, Bus Organization, Teacher Packet distribution; and “making/assembling projects.”

iii.    Procure complimentary Coca Cola products for 2nd, 3rd graders and volunteers throughout the weekend

iv.   Oversee the Supplies and Materials for the hands-on activities and festival logistics and hospitality areas

i.      Oversee the Brookshire’s Cakes and frostings and décor for the weekend Cake Walk

j.      Design the plans for the physical Transition of CELEBRATE EDUCATION activities for children to the WEEKEND of ARTBREAK Festival for families.

k.    Coordinate activities, schedules, hospitality, and set up/take down with the staff of the Shreveport Convention Center

l.      Create a system for procuring and assigning Volunteers for the week and weekend


4.                    Oversee consistent and effective communication among SRAC and:

a.                   School Systems
b.                   School Administrators, Teachers, and Students
c.                    Artists
d.                   Chairmen
e.                    Volunteers
f.                     Partnering Organizations
g.                   Sponsors
h.                    Elected Officials


5.            Assist with other SRAC programs and events such as Christmas in the Sky, monthly programming at artspace, and Shreveport Common events/activities


The position of ArtBreak Director is a full time, salaried exempt management position at the Shreveport Regional Arts Council.   The ArtBreak Director position is provided the following benefits:

1.            2 weeks’ sick leave (grows with time; non-compensatory)

2.            2 weeks’ vacation leave (grows with time; partially compensatory)

3.            Health insurance; employee contribution is 20%
